Josh and Maddy break up when Police Sergent, Mike Emerson questions Josh about Mangrove River High burnt down. Josh then escapes from the hospital and goes to Ricky Sharpe for help. Soon, Maddy and Nate Cooper takes him back to the hospital.
Maddy's parents, accepts the relationship, but Spencer's parents, especially Spencer's father, Ian Harrington doesn't approve the relationship, saying that Maddy isn't good enough. When Maddy's parents heard what Spencer's family told them, they were furious and forbid her to date Spencer. Maddy and Spencer decided to run away from home to be together and arrived to Summer Bay.
Evelyn MacGuire
Clementi defended her character stating that she feels "suffocated" and people are "crowding her". She cannot come to terms with her diagnosis because "it's all too much". She is also reluctant to start chemotherapy because she wants to decide on treatment option. The actress believed her character was not behaving weak but rather using her "strong and smart" personality traits to fight the illness.
A fight erupts between Andy Barrett and Wayne "Tank" Snelgrove behind a caravan at the Caravan Park, knocking over a gas canister and exposing live wires during a hospital fundraiser. The guests are unaware of the tragedy that awaits them when suddenly one of the caravans explodes putting many lives in danger. Oscar MacGuire is killed instantly, Hannah Wilson dies later following a head injury, while Maddy's left arm is trapped under some of the debris. New doctor Tori Morgan , also a guest at the fundraiser, is on hand to aid the victims. Following the surgery, Maddy breaks up with Matt as she thinks that he will no longer love her due to her disability, but he tries to convince her that he intends to stick by her. Maddy unsuspectingly slips out of the hospital just as her mother, Tanya arrives in the bay.

But Nate warns her that she needs to begin treatment right away to survive. Clementi believed the storyline was a "contemporary issue" and hoped it was portrayed "in the right light". The actress was an ambassador for a cancer charity, so was keen to depict the "raw truth" of the illness. Her main priority for her was to do the storyline justice and make it accurate for real life cancer patients.
Haddy told Erin Miller from TV Week that she did research into how teenage girls have coped with being sexually assaulted. She also hoped the storyline would show girls that they do not have to be afraid to say no to what the guy is asking. It was first broadcast on the Seven Network on 17 January 1988. Casting
Roo and Alf found out from Oscar that Maddy has run away and tried to call her. Spencer convinced Maddy to come home, but she refused and didn't tell him where she was. Oscar tracks Maddy down in the city, by using clues on her scrape book.
They first met a high school before Summer Bay, but Spencer's father, Ian thinks Maddy is not good enough, which angers Maddy's parents and banned her to see Spencer. The two ran away and ended up in Summer Bay, and hired a caravan from Roo Stewart. They call themselves "brother and sister" to Roo, her husband Harvey Ryan and Roo's father, Alf. But Alf witnessed them kissing and the two admit the truth to Roo, Harvey and Alf that they're not siblings, but lovers.
Spencer Harrington
They came to Summer Bay so they could be together, so what's keeping them there now they have broken up? Also cant stand the way Roo and Harvey are fawning over them when they haven't even known them very long. Parker told Claire Crick from All About Soap that Roo can empathise with Maddy and Spencer because of her own history.
Soon, Maddy's feelings revealed to Oscar, and she gives him a kiss, starting her relationship with him. Maddy was seen making out with Oscar on the couch, and they turned down an offer of tea from Roo. They make out again, but this time, Alf tells them no kissing on his couch. Oscar does a romantic gesture for Maddy, and they had their date. After their date, Maddy discovers that her nose is bleeding.
Clementi explained that her character only thought about starting a family when she got believed that she was pregnant, but that was taken away from her. She added that when she is left alone in hospital, "a wave of clarity washes over her". She believes that her prognosis means her treatment may not work and she may die. When Roo learns that Maddy has left she asks Oscar to help find her. He discovers her "bucket list" and realises where she is. Oscar travels to the city to find Maddy and convinces her to return home for treatment.
Chris Harrington, played by Johnny Ruffo, made his first screen appearance on 1 April 2013. The character and Ruffo's casting was announced on 19 October 2012. Ruffo told Christine Sams from The Sydney Morning Herald that he had asked his agent to check out what roles were available, when the Home and Away part came up. After his first audition, he received a callback for a second audition. Ruffo called himself "very fortunate" after learning he had won the role because quite a few people also tried out for it.
They soon hang out after Casey's break-up with Tamara Kingsley. Maddy kissed Casey, and they almost had sex, but he rejected her. Maddy was devastated when she heard that Casey died, and she attends to his wake. Evelyn said that Josh got bashed up at the Caravan Park, and Maddy was angry at him for coming to Evelyn instead of her and ask them what's going on between the both of them. Josh said nothing, but Maddy said well, they're here, together and walks away in anger, telling Josh that why can't he get help from his actual girlfriend.
Maddy sees Oscar trying to flirt with Asia to make her jealous. Matt told Maddy that he accepted Asia's invitation for being her formal date and told Maddy that he'll hook up with many girls at schoolies. Matt was confused and confronts her why she wouldn't let him. Maddy told Matt that she has feelings for him, but she shuts them away, cause she still loves Oscar. Maddy debuted on-screen during the episode airing on 24 January 2013. The actress was living abroad when she was offered the role and flew back to Sydney to take the role.
She is six years older than her character, who is sixteen upon her entrance. Haddy called her character "sweet, but awkward" and noted that she is a bit of "a loner". Rosie has always lived in Summer Bay, but has never been seen on-screen before. She looks up to Sasha Bezmel and when they eventually become friends, Sasha invites her to a party.
